The last of 3 long driving days. We were tired and over slept a little this morning so it was after 9 by the time we got on the road after having a great breakfast at the hotel. Just down the road we got off the highway onto old Route 66 for a bit of geocaching but that didn't seem to be going well so we got back on the highway since we had 750 miles ahead of us today.
From Oklahoma we crossed into the panhandle of Texas
From there we went to an interesting Rest Area for a Virtual Geocache and found . . .
a windmill in the building. There was something else about the building that was sort of disconcerting . . .
Each rest room was designed to be a tornado shelter. . . . glad we didn't need it as a shelter today.
The Texas Panhandle is pretty barren land.
From there we crossed into one our least favorite states
Each time we have been in this state we find something about it we don't like. The first time there was a late season ice storm, last time we traveled in the Southern part of the state and found it to be disgustingly dirty with garbage blowing around everywhere. Today we were going to do some geocaching of the geological features but as we got into the state the wind started to really blow and there was sand and tumbleweed blowing all around making the visibility low . . . the temps also went from about 60 to 47 and it started to snow . . . .I told Al that New Mexico is not on the list of places I would like to go to again.
We could not get out of the state fast enough and next up was
Yes the sign says Arizona . . . but the sun was shining in the camera.
Tonight we are in Flagstaff and relaxing with pizza and wings. . . .750 miles from Elk City, OK
Tomorrow the real vacation begins.
Did taxes all day so all in all I'd rather have been in New Mexico. Oh, and you guys forgot the "Amazing and Unusual USA" book.
ReplyDeleteWOW! You one of my favorite places AND my least favorite in one day!
ReplyDeleteFor the record, Flagstaff is on the favorite list! The mid winter event was yesterday in Speculator NY, you would have loved it, hovered right around 20 degrees, snowed most of the day, at some points it was darn near a blizzard! Snowshoeing was awesome with almost 2 feet of new snow within the previous days!
